Habitat Manipulation

Removing food sources

Seed-bearing plants have been removed near airports to remove food sources, while insecticides and pesticides have been used to kill insects and remove food sources for insect-eating birds, thus deterring them from settling. At Salt Lake City, 70 acres of grassland have been replaced with ground-up asphalt. Airports are also experimenting with planting grasses that birds like geese do not like to eat.

Removing shelter

Brush and trees have been removed near airports with the help of wildlife experts because they are attractive nesting sites for birds, and grass has been mowed short to remove shelter for birds. Airport personnel also cover nearby ponds with netting to prevent birds from landing. Airports also employ methods to collect or temporarily pond rainfall runoff so as to prevent the formation of wetland environments near the airport which are attractive to waterfowl.
