Killing Birds

Geese have been targeted around La Guardia Airport, JFK Airport and Newark Airport by wildlife officials with shotguns. In some cases, birds have been rounded up in traps and gassed with lethal concentrations of carbon dioxide. For example, nearly 70,000 birds have been slaughtered in the New York City Area since the 2009 incident in which US Airways Flight 1549 was forced to land in the Hudson River after a bird strike. Poisoning has also been used, with United Airlines poisoning hundreds of birds by laying out corn kernels laced with toxins. However, such methods have led to public outcry due to the inhumane methods of bird culling and the targeting of endangered birds, and public campaigns have been established to fight for humane alternatives to culling.

Targeting Eggs

Pigs have been used in the Salt Lake City Airport area to disrupt gull habitats by trampling and eating the gull's eggs, and are now used for a few weeks every spring as a deterrent. Egg addling techniques have also been used, whereby birds are scared from their nests and their eggs are addled or oiled by shaking the eggs individually or submerging them in vegetable oil, which results in unsuccessful hatching. This in turn also deters birds from going to these areas to nest and lay eggs.
